MPS-SQ (Socially Qualified) is a certification standard developed by MPS.

The certificate aims to ensure that ornamental horticultural products are produced under good working conditions.

Objectives

  • Improve working conditions and guarantee the health and safety of employees in the workplace.

  • Meet the demands of customers and market parties.

  • Comply with international labour standards, including those set by the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Scope of Application

  • Applicable to growers in the agricultural sector.

  • Certification covers the entire business (not individual crops or locations).

The standard includes criteria in various domains:

1. Personnel & Working Conditions

  • Valid employment contracts for all employees.

  • No child labour or forced labour.

  • Equal pay and no discrimination.

  • Wages not below the World Bank Poverty Line.

  • Freedom of association and collective bargaining.

2. Health & Safety

  • Appointment of a safety officer.

  • Risk assessment and safety procedures.

  • Availability of personal protective equipment, clean drinking water, and sanitation facilities.

  • Training in emergency response and first aid.

3. Training & Communication

  • Annual training on safety and MPS-SQ standards.

  • Clear communication regarding employees' rights and obligations.

4. Crop Protection

  • Safe handling and storage of crop protection products.

  • Medical examinations for pesticide applicators.

  • Use of legally permitted crop protection products only.

5. Housing (if applicable)

  • Must meet minimum standards for hygiene, safety, and comfort.

6. Ethics & Documentation

  • Anti-corruption policy.

  • Accurate and honest administration.

Audit & Certification Process

  • Annual audits by an accredited certification body.

  • Includes employee interviews, document reviews, and workplace inspections.
